Difference Between Quartz and Granite Countertops
Kitchen countertops should be replaced at certain times, either because of scratches and cuts, or just because you no longer like the existing one. Although most people have a kitchen counter made of some kind of wood – or at least similar – material, we often look for a granite counter as it is not only elegant but also a kind of status symbol. Granite countertops has already had a serious challenge, which is nothing more than a cheaper quartz countertops. But what exactly is the difference between the two materials?
Quartz countertops is a material made of 90-94% quartz and 6-10% high strength polyester resin. Polyester resin is added to reduce its porosity and increase its flexibility. Although it is not a natural raw material, it has the advantageous properties of quartz, such as resistance and hardness. Granite countertops, on the other hand, is a deep igneous rock that often does not come to the surface, so it often solidifies in the magma chamber and is not so popular in both interior design and burial, it is an extremely compact and resistant material, which can withstand the weather. copes well.
The advantage of quartz countertops is that, because it is made artificially, it occurs in almost innumerable colors due to the development of technology. Thanks to its flexibility, it is easy to create our unique ideas from it, but, for example, it is no problem to pour the sink into one with the countertop, which is unthinkable in the case of Granite countertops. Another advantage is that it is not porous due to the added resin, so there is no need to worry if something spills on it, because it can be cleaned easily and hygienically. In the case of quartz composite, we do not have to be afraid of bacteria either, as there are no small depressions or gaps in which they could settle, the mirror-smooth surface can be made bacteria-free by a wipe. Its durability is shown by the fact that it is difficult to destroy even in everyday use, due to its quality it is an extremely hard material.
Although quartz countertops, like everything, seems to be an almost perfect raw material so far, it also has its drawbacks. These worktops are only produced in certain sizes, so we have to deal with the fact that sometimes joints have to be made for the islands and are extremely sensitive to heat. Unlike granite, care should be taken with hot pots because sudden changes in temperature can cause the quartz to crack or melt. In addition, it is not in a very good relationship with sunlight either, as it can discolor under the influence of strong natural light.
One of the great advantages of Granite countertops is that it not only comes in many different colors, but there are no two worktops with the same pattern and 100% natural material. If we treat it properly, it can last for the rest of our lives, we can safely cut and slice on its surface, there will be no trace left and we don’t have to be afraid of strong sunlight. The disadvantage is that due to its compactness, additional costs can be charged for tailoring to individual needs, in addition, it does not hurt to impregnate the granite every few years so that the spilled liquids do not cause a problem.
In summary, both materials are extremely hard, and come in a lot of colors, yet the quartz countertops has significantly more disadvantages than granite with heat, there is no right or wrong answer it is what suits your best.
