As much as possible, wipe your countertops off and if in case you have spilled something in it by accident, then definitely blot it up quickly and dry it off completely. On the other hand, while wiping your countertops, make sure that you are using a pH neutral cleaner or a cleaner that has been specifically created for granite countertops. Avoid using harsh and abrasive cleaners. Make sure that you clean it thoroughly in order to completely get rid of residue and loose particles.

Using the sealer, saturate the surface that you wish to be sealed. However, before doing this, get some plastic wrap to cover the other areas that you don’t want to be sealed like your sink. Also, make sure to follow the instructions of the manufacturer to ensure that you are doing it right. After you have applied it, allow the sealer to penetrate the stone for about 10 minutes or as instructed and as mentioned before, granite is porous and so, your countertop might need another application afterwards. The number of applications needed may also depend on the sealer you have purchased, so be wise in choosing the sealer to be used.

Remove the excess sealer and clean the surface again

In order for you to remove the excess sealer, you can simply make use of a paper towel or any dry cloth that you have and then wipe off the excess sealer in a circular motion. Afterwards, leave it for about 6 hours in order for it to cure. Again, the waiting time may also depend on the sealer used, so better read the instructions in the label. You may also use a granite polish if you want. Then, after that, clean the remaining residue. You can check whether your countertops have been sealed or not by pouring water in it and if there are water marks, then resealing it is necessary.

Some things to keep in mind in cleaning and sealing granite countertops

First of all, you need to make sure that you are wearing gloves as you clean and seal your granite countertops. Doing so would help you avoid skin irritation. It would also be best for you to do the process when your house is empty. So, if your children does not have a class, you can ask your neighbor to tend to them and allow them to stay in their house for the meantime. Also, in case you have pets inside, you might as well take them outside too. On the other hand, as the sealer penetrates in the granite, make sure that your kitchen area is well ventilated. You can turn on your fan or open your window. That way, it would penetrate faster.
